A NEW COURSE

After several requests for English for Life from people who don't have the required level of English necessary to join a conversation group - B1 (see Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) - but who wish to join a conversation group and have a good level of spoken English, Pré English for Life was created.

Group classes with a maximum of 4 people where the basis of English is learnt up to intermediate level. While the necessary grammar and vocabulary are taught with the help of an English manual, we still have space for fluency practice with topics chosen by the students. A perfect balance between accuracy and fluency.

Dr. Tomoko Takahashi, dean of the graduate school at Soka University of America, graciously recommended English for Life in this way:

Ana’s journey of “For Life” began almost ten years ago - she has pursued her passion since then.  And, this English for Life program demonstrates her growth as an educator and individual.

Ana's keen interest in and passion for English teaching, life-long learning, and human education are so inspiring that her program makes English learners of all ages want to become good communicators as well as excellent human beings.  "For Life” is truly the fruit of Ana’s professional training in language education, her creativity and critical thinking skills, as well as her wonderful personality!"

English for Life Jovens is based on

the national programs for teaching

English and the curricular goals

established for each level,

from year 5 to 12.

However, after many years of

observing and teaching adults who

had years of English in Portuguese

schools but who continue to have

serious and deep problems when

faced with real situations where

they need to speak English, this course is focused on something different.

Respecting the grammatical structures and the themes proposed by the national programs, it is undoubtedly possible and desirable to expand them towards an approach focused on real English communication. In the English for Life Jovens courses, the students are continuously encouraged to speak English and to express their opinions and personal experiences about each theme or topic.

We use short videos or documentaries, songs, photography, cartoons and other means of communication in order to allow students to reflect on and use the experience of others as a starting point to express their own ideas. All the listening instruments are also used in these courses to improve an element of learning a second language where students seem to find great difficulty: how to train correct listening skills.

In the beginning of each school year/ course, a revision of the most important grammatical structures from the previous school year is also made.

Finally, it is important to note that the goal of these courses is not to focus on school tests but the true learning of a language for life. However, students will undoubtedly see very concrete results and will learn a lot of English. They will absolutely be able to communicate in English.

Here we have it... English for Life Jovens.

Testimonials

“ When I was challenged to join this English course, I thought it would be the same as usual. Grammar and more Grammar. However, I was surprised when I was told that the main objective is to learn English using Dialogue.

It has been fantastic and the only sad thing is that it´s  going to end soon.”

                                                                  Karim Shamsudin

"I came to the course to improve my spoken English but I am realizing that I am learning much more about myself and about the importance of listening and respecting others' opinions and points of view to create a real dialogue."

                                                                            Carolina Silva

"Thank you for the wonderful learning journey that we have had so far. I've finally found an English learning method that makes me feel enthusiastic and works at the same time. The classes are very exciting! They provide important information about grammar while giving opportunities to apply all that knowledge realistically, through dialogue about different themes choosen by the students.

I hope to keep learning with you and the colleagues next year."
